UHS-VU earned a hard fought victory of Yarra Valley in round 1 of the 2010 season. After a tight opening term, UHS-VU gained the ascendancy in the second quarter, kicking five goals to two.

UHS-VU managed to hold this lead through to the last quarter where injuries, cramping, foul language and weddings threatened to derail a likely win.

Yarra Valley, who had dropped a grade from 2009, stepped up their game to snare some early goals to place pressure an come within striking distance. However determination and the sheer willpower of UHS-VU enabled steadying goals and a first round win by 10 points.

Next week, we can look forward to taking on Ivanhoe, another team to have dropped a division from 2009, in our first home game for the year at Brens.

2 wins in a row and still a shot a finals hope?

Amazing what a few wins on the trot can do. 2 weeks ago UHSVU were teetering on relegation, desperately needing a win to eradicate the ‘chance’ to head back to D4.

But after yesterdays comprehensive win against Elsternwick and few other results working in our favour, UHSVU remain just one game (and percentage) outside the top 4. And whilst this is something to work towards, the closeness of the D3 ladder in 2009 also sees UHSVU one game away from relegation.

Yesterday’s win was arguably one of UHSVU’s better performances, evidenced by the 20 goals spread amongst 10 players.

UHSVU started well and controlled the early ball but the small nature of the ground made finding space up forward difficult to find. Temming, who started at full forward and playing his final game, was contesting well and opened up proceedings with a sharp mark in the goal square. 3 goals to 2 in the first quarter kept things tight.

The second quarter opened up and UHSVU were able to squeeze out 4 goals to Elsternwick’s 1 and effective take a 4 goal lead into half time.

In the third quarter, UHSVU put their foot down and kicked 8 goals to 4, which included best on ground Rusty Matthews putting in his nomination for goal of the year. Bender and Temming continued to provide targets up forward and the midfield was able to control the ball through the middle of the ground.

Taking a 9 goal load into the final term, UHSVU perhaps relaxed a little and allowed Elsternwick a small glimmer of hope when they kicked the first 2 goals of the quarter within the first 2 minutes. This hope was short lived as UHSVU steadied and kicked 5 in the last quarter to ultimately win by 59 points.

In the reserves, UHSVU posted a 91 point win. We are currently sitting 5th, only 2 points behind West Brunswick, which means the round 17 clash against West Brunswick may be the crucial game.

UHS-VU vs Powerhouse, Rd 15, 25 July 2009

In two gripping and low scoring contests, UHS-VU came away with well earned wins in both the senior and reserves grade against Powerhouse. We also claimed the post match skolling contest, but couldn’t win the raffle to make it a clean sweep.

Seniors

If there was ever a game described as “a battle of the two defenses”, then this was surely it. A remarkable half time score line – zero goals a piece – said it all.

UHS-VU went into this game with the knowledge that if our disappointing season were to continue, then relegation was a definite possibility. The vibe in the change rooms prior to the game forecast the manner in which the team played – desperate, determined and committed.

As alluded to above, the first quarter was a tight affair with Powerhouse not taking advantage of their home ground and a breeze, despite having the majority of the play in their forward half. UHSVU’s intensity was a likely factor in this as our defense stood tall.

The second quarter began in much the same manner as the first, with Powerhouse, now into the breeze, making the first attacks into the breeze. We settled as the quarter lengthened, but were unable to penetrate the Powerhouse defense. Two points late in the term was the result of our efforts.

The third ‘opened up’ with a fantastic effort from coach Rick Watts, slotting a 30 metre goal from the boundary (the first of the day) before Morto slotted another one from a tight angle. Again the UHSVU defense remained strong throughout the quarter and didn’t allow Powerhouse to return the favour.

Despite the goal scoring spree of the third term, we entered the final quarter leading by only eight points and the game still in the balance. However confidence amongst UHSVU was strong (something that has been missing all season) and our four goal final term shutting out any chance of a Powerhouse win.

The highlight of the last term - Dale ‘Dr Smooth’ Lacy slotting a rare goal.
The lowlight o the last term – Full back Sean ‘The Boss’ Desbois hitting the post after a sensational running effort.

At the end of the day it was a great effort by the boys and certainly a win to savour.

We can now look forward to our remaining games in the knowledge that our best efforts will stretch any side. We also look forward to continuing the mid week barbeques at Devo’s house!

Reserves
Our reserves also entered this game with a lot to play for, however a potential finals spot was on the line rather than possible relegation.

In perhaps a preview of what was to come, a tense and tight first half resulted in a slender 4 point lead to UHSVU (2 goals to 1!).

The third quarter saw Powerhouse kicking with the breeze and taking advantage of it, slotting 3 goals. However, the effort of UHSVU cannot go unmentioned as kicking one into it left us with a 7 point bridge to gap in the last term.

Whilst not insurmountable, the flavor of the day was low scoring and there was never any guarantee that we would in fact get there. Nonetheless, a brilliant final term saw UHS kick four goals and limiting Powerhouse to 1 point and running away with a well earned 18 point win.

With Powerhouse sitting third, this was a very important win and now gives us the opportunity to claim that top four spot.

Young Vultures win on Past Players day

UHS-VU/Flemington 9.1. (55) d Old Camberwell 8.5. (53)

On the day the past players came to lunch, we managed to snatch a win in a genuine heart stopper at home. As coach Kim Kershaw told the huddle after the game: ‘ It was a 50/50 game that could have gone either way. Today we take the four points’.

In difficult blustery conditions at the bounce, the bigger bodies of OC were teaming better and marking well all over the ground – our defence did well to restrict their scoring to just a goal in the opening quarter. The second quarter – our best – saw UHS slam on 4 goals to their 2, as James Henry once again showed his excellent skills in front of goals and Hugo Everist put his raking left foot to good use up the ground.

We were three goals up at 3/4 time and looked home, but Old Camberwell were not done yet and piled on 4 goals in the last quarter with the two sides going goal for goal with 5 minutes to play. Hasan Asir slotted a vital goal to put us back in front and we held on to win by just two points in spite of OC having more scoring shots. Congrats to those who made the most of their opportunities!

Vultures take on league leader

UHS-VU U18s took on ladder leaders Northern Bullants and were competitive to half-time. UHS-VU matched the Bullants in intensity and commitment to the ball and this showed on the score-board at the main break, with UHS-VU trailing by 5 points. After half-time the Northern Bullants showed why they have comfortably accounted for each of their opponents. In wet conditions the superior the skills of Northern Bullants, combined with an increased work rate, saw the Bullants put on 11 goals after half-time. Northern Bullants were clearly the better side after half-time, but the likes of Everist, Allen, Moore and Russell continued to battle hard for the Vultures.

Under-18s win first match in VAFA

An impressive display from the UHS-VU under-18s saw the newcomers hold off a fast-finishing Therry Penola in the first round on Saturday.

The VAFA has introduced an Under-18 competition for the first time in 2009, with UHS-VU fielding one of the 8 foundation teams, a re-incarnation of the UHS-Flemington Juniors under-18 team that has competed in the WRFL over recent years.

The boys adapted rapidly to the fast-flowing style of amateur football, and at quarter time both teams had 3 goals on the board. Uni stepped up the intensity in the second quarter with resident redheads Jack and Cailean dominating the midfield through their hardness at the footy. Timmy and Jimmy were injecting excitement into the forward line with their high marking and accurate kicking, and Uni took a 2 goal lead into the long break. UHS-VU dominated the third term, with Lachie and Ben continuing to control the aerial contests at stoppages and around the ground. The halfback line was impassable and enabled the Green and Tan’s to take a 5 goal lead into the final term. The game was certainly not over, as Therry Penola came out firing in the last quarter. Perhaps the hard-running Uni boys were tiring as they were forced to withstand repeated Therry attacks. The Green-and-Tan’s managed to dig deep, and in a high pressure conclusion to an entertaining game, the final siren sounded with UHSVU hanging on to win 13 10 88 to 11 10 76.

Congratulations to coach Kim Kershaw and the boys on a successful beginning to this new an exciting chapter in the history of UHSVU football club.

In other round one action, the UHSVU senior team came from a 29 point half-time deficit to record a two goal win over St Mary’s Salesian. Kirky kicked 6 for the winners, while veteran Crackers was among the best. The reserves were also involved in a thriller, but couldn’t get over the line, going down by 4 points in the early game at Ferndale Park.

Round 2 sees all three teams playing at home at Brens Oval in Parkville. The ANZAC-day action begins at 10am with the under-18s hosting Oakleigh, and Wattsy will be looking to keep his undefeated senior coaching record intact when the Seniors play Bentleigh at 2:30pm.

Reserves miss out on premiership

UHSVU put up a courageous effort against Williamstown last Sunday in the D3 reserves grand final but came up just short.

A lightening start from Uni High gave them a 3 goal lead and confidence going in the second quarter. Uni High were given some relief in the second with some wayward kicking for goal by Willy, while the Vultures could only manage a goal.

The third quarter saw Willy extend their lead out to 4 goals and they seemed to have the momentum. Spurred on by a inspirational address from coach Jordan O’Neill in the 3rd quarter break, Uni High kicked 5 goals to Willy’s 2 in the last, but it wasn’t enough to secure the win.

UHSVU fought well all day in the ruck all over the ground, in particular Dollo and Thommo in the middle. Wattsy and Cam Certo also played strong games, with Cam snaring 3 goals in the process.

Jordo spoke after the match, saying that he was proud of the effort of the boys over the course of the season, and he believed that if the team sticks together, there’s no reason why they can’t go one better next season and win the flag.

After disappointing losses to Power House in both grades the previous week, both the senior and reserves sides fronted up to Fearon Reserve on Saturday with one, simple intention: to win. Unfortunately, Williamstown had other plans, which saw this intention quickly devolve, in both matches, to maintaining some sort of respectability in the face of certain defeat.

The reserves side started the day off in a reasonable fashion, keeping their opponents (who were kicking with a strong wind) more or less at bay for most of the first quarter. However, Williamstown soon broke through the tight defence, and went into quarter time almost 40 points ahead, with UHS yet to score. The second quarter provided no respite, and despite managing to kick a couple of goals, when the siren rang out to signify half time, Uni High were 79 points in arrears and without an interchange bench.

Image: UHS Reserves interchange bench at half time.

Despite playing out the game with only 18 fit players, UHS managed to save at least some face in the second half, going goal-for-goal with Williamstown for the rest of the match to wind up 88 points on the wrong side of the ledger when the final siren went.

For the senior side this was a must-win game if finals were to be any possibility at all. Given the tightness of the previous contest between the sides earlier in the year, it was hoped by many that the two-goal defeat at Brens would be reversed this time around. This goal was not helped by no less than three players going off in the first quarter with blood streaming from their faces. After some deft work by the trainers, two of the three were able to return to the field.

Image: A UHS player is given the all-clear to return to the field.

A hard-fought first quarter saw the team go into the first break 11 points behind, with a great deal of work to do in order to maintain or diminish that gap against the wind in the second quarter. It was not to be, however, as Williamstown piled on 6 goals 8 to Uni's solitary behind, and at half time the margin had stretched out to 9 goals, with a comeback looking unlikely. Despite a 4-goal third quarter, the margin was out to 70 points at three-quarter time, and with thoughts of a win no longer in consideration, the final quarter involved a struggle to not let the margin blow out too far. Whilst UHS managed to better their second-quarter against-the-wind efforts considerably, it couldn't stop an eventually heavy loss by 97 points. Some positives to come out of the match were the unceasing efforts of some of the younger players, as well as the ever-present determination and persistance of more experienced footballers such as Super and Langers in the middle.

Next week sees us back at Brens for the first time in three weeks to take on Monash, with the hope of repeating the results in both grades we managed to obtain against them earlier this season.

Power House hasn't been a happy hunting ground over the past few visits for UHSVU and Saturday was no exception. The lake may be attractive in summer, however a blowing gale and below freezing temperatures didn't help our cause.

Power House, who are currently sitting fourth in both grades, were more desperate early in both games and played the conditions well.

For the seniors, a good effort from the back line, particularly Shane Cracknell and Dale Lacy, who reduced the Power House advance. A positive to take out of the game was the pressure put on by the forwards in the last quarter, which was reflected on the scoreboard.

In the two’s, great endeavour was shown from Jason Ford across half back and Josh Hall on ball. After half time, Adam Helner used his grunt in the middle of the ground and Adam Trevethan started to provide some drive into the half forward line.

The club faces one of its toughest games next week against the top side Williamstown. For the seniors, it’s the last throw of the dice to make the top 4, and for the two’s, a great test before finals footy.

Best Players: C. Langendorf, S. Cracknell, L. Gorringe, R. Matthews, D. Pinney, J. Henry

The seniors travelled to St. James Park for a vital game against Swinburne University. A lot rode on this game as it was extremely important we got the 4 points to keep ourselves in the finals race.

It was a hard fought, tough game of footy with neither team being able to put there stamp on the game. In the end we got over the line by 8 points with some fantastic individual performances including Chris Langendorf in the middle, Shane Cracknell down back and the magnificent first senior game for James Henry from the under 18s who kicked 6 goals as well as taking an absolute screamer in the last quarter to the delight of the crowd and the senior coach!!

We have now kept ourselves in the finals race and are now only one game out of the four with a MASSIVE game coming up against second placed Hawthorn at home. We will be working hard on the track and with a couple of big inclusions this week, we are pumped and ready to take Hawthorn on and come away with another win!!

Best Players: T. O'Conner, T. Woodlock, A. Kirk, A. Hellner, A. Trevethan, W. Williams

The Reserves started slowly this week kicking into a slight breeze and working out how to play Swinburne’s mall ground. We re-grouped at quarter time and started to get our hands on the ball and create run off half back and through the midfield. Tim O'Connor, Tom Woodlock and Dan Walsh linked well and made great use of the breeze. Ash Kirk, fresh after a trip overseas, was playing well up forward and finished with 3 goals for the afternoon. We went into half time a few goals ahead.

During the 3rd quarter we deliberately played defensively to restrict the oppositions scoring opportunities with the breeze. Cam Certo and Adam Helner played loose across half back with great effect. Adam Trevethan and Adrian Ludlow rebounded the ball to counter attach giving the two's a handy break leading into the last break, after which we kicked away for a 7 goal win.

Special mention to Tom Harris who played his 50th game for the club. Tommy, who has played the majority of his games across half back, found himself in unfamiliar territory leading out of the square in the last quarter.

Next game v Hawthorn at home.

The Seniors played extremely well and had opportunities to win the game. The pressure around the football was fantastic and the 2nd and 3rd efforts were the best they’ve been all year. This performance shows that the side has the ability to match it with any team in the competition, and it’s now super important that we continue this week in, week out.

Shane Cracknell played a strong role in the half back line, as he does more often than not. And congratulations to Warren Smith, who played his 100th game for the club… the 4th time he has reached the milestone in his career.

Next weekend we travel to Caulfield to face Monash Gryphons... two must-win games for the club.

In one of the better performances for UHSVU, both the Seniors and Reserves played consistent footy for four quarters against a club that has performed well over the last month. It was evident from the sidelines that the guys started to really enjoy their footy.

It was a welcome return for Max Mora in the Seniors, contributing with 2 goals and lots of hard work crumbing. In the 2nds, the midfielders played well and Pete Shepherdson was solid down back.

The major downside for the day was losing one of our key backmen, Anthony Milicevic. Unfortunately Ant will be undergoing surgery on his leg. We wish him all the best.

UHSVU will face its biggest test for the year this coming weekend, playing the undefeated Williamstown, who have amassed a sizable percentage in both grades. The club is looking forward to the challenge… Reserves start 11.40am, Seniors at 2.00pm, home at Brens Oval.

A bitterly cold and wet day in Dandenong greeted UHSVU for their clash against St Johns. The reserves started the day well, winning by 7 goals, assisted by a solid performance from the back line, and good pressure up forward, with last seasons u18s captain Nat Salew kicking 4 impressive goals.

Disappointing second and third quarters meant that the senior team couldn’t continue the momentum that the reserves had created earlier in the day. Player/coach Scott Whyte fought hard in the difficult conditions taking some good grabs up forward and bagging 6 goals. Ruckman Dave Pinney did well in the frequent ball-ups and was a constant presence around the ground.

Next weekend UHSVU host Powerhouse at Brens Oval.

Round 4 vs Swinburne

Swinburne kicked out to an early lead in the first quarter, before the home side lifted the tempo to draw roughly even at quarter time. After the break UHS came out on fire, with a 5-goal to none second quarter setting up a solid lead on which they continued to build for the rest of the afternoon, running out eventual winners by 61 points. Special mentions must go to Rhys Kirk, who shone in the forward line after a slow start to finish with a bag of 7 goals, and to Wattsy, back for his first game in almost a year after suffering a knee injury against St Mary's in 2007, and emerging unscathed from the run. Undoubtedly this solid win will boost the team's confidence after a disappointing loss to Elsternwick the week before, and ahead of this coming weekend's clash with our 2007 grand final conquest, Eltham OC.

Earlier in the day the reserves started at a cracking pace, keeping their opponents scoreless in the first quarter whilst piling on 6 majors themselves. Swinburne tightened things up in the second quarter, with a run of 3 goals in a row looking like being the start of a comeback, but to their credit our boys held fast and kicked on to increase their quarter-time lead by the long break. A high-scoring third quarter saw the lead once again whittled away, but the reverse took place in the final term (despite the best efforts of one Swinburne player who nearly cracked Goddard's skull open with a late, high charge, and was extremely lucky not to end up in the umpire's book), and Uni High ended up 52 points on the right side of the balance sheet. Biggest star for the Green & Tan was Jihad, who had about 60 touches and laid some devastating tackles in the midfield, whilst Goddard was also impressive.
